We live in a world that has come to value its privacy. Sometimes, privacy protection can take unusual turns. For example, Congress has revised a federal law to require privacy waivers before revealing patients' medical conditions to all third parties, including spouses, and even to those persons acting as agents under Advance Health Care Directives (regardless of whether one is a spouse or not). This bizarre result has led to the creation of documents such as the HIPAA Authorization to allow named agents to access their principals' medical records.
